Sculpture springs from nature. Rhythms of elements combine to offer something greater than the sums of parts. Rather than instructing the viewer, I seek to create objects that hold their attention in a state of contemplation or wonder.
I am drawn to bronze for its strength and historical perspective. Besides limitless form, clay offers a fragile and dynamic surface. Lastly, the synthetic and colorful qualities of vinyl attract me. I enjoy the opposition of ideas inherent in these materials. My primary subject is the animal figure because it is the common thread of our experience. Underlying themes supporting this work are spirituality, mythology, and kitsch.
I was trained in ceramics and received the Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Cranbrook fostered in me a devotion to fine Craft with an emphasis on materials and process. With this work, I am accessing the larger art world with a growing emphasis on ideas and context. These sculptures spring from an investigation into primitive, religious and contemporary western art.
