My work encompasses a variety of subjects drawn from the natural world, current affairs and people around me.
In recent years, I have gradually moved away from carved functional ware to murals and most recently, to physically lighter wall sculptures that explore open spaces, light and color using constructed porcelain plates and relief.
My porcelain sculptures are unique in the way they juxtapose form with content and in the techniques used. Few artists hand build with thin (1/8" to ¼") porcelain plates outside the realm of functional ware. Typically, the focus is on form and functionality while my work focuses on form and narrative. My work utilizes traditional hand building and sculpting techniques and combines it with tile-making, computer technology and the use of flexible printing plates to create sculpted relief. Finishes include slips, stains, sgraffito surfaces, and glaze. These techniques, in conjunction with my design concepts, result in the juxtaposition of both realistic and abstract forms which interact to create a story.
