While Arthur was using the drawing studio at the Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle, he created many clay figure studies following the same time routine used by his studio companions who were working with charcoal or pen and ink. The result was a collection of very spontaneous clay sketches, and an increased ability to rapidly interpret what he was seeing. The best of these clay sketches is Marie, B.C. The title
refers to the very primitive modeling that defines form, but not detail. "The model was an 80 year old woman named Marie who presented us with her
beautifully rounded and very feminine body."
