BURKA

This piece was inspired by the treatment of women in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime. I was raised a Muslim and have read the passages in the Quran referring to how women should dress. Nowhere is it mandated that women should cover their faces so as to be completely hidden from view and so lose their identities. I use the burka as a metaphor for the oppression of women by men using religion as the vehicle. The rear view shows the interior (representing the woman), a golden color highlighting a complex texture.
