Mr. Piersa knew from an early age he wanted to make art. Born in New York, he grew up in South Dakota and has resided in Minnesota since 1974. He currently lives in Independence, Minnesota.
His formal education includes Radio Tech School as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, a BA in Art from California State University, Sacramento, Industrial Engineering Classes at Sacramento City College, Grad Work at UC Sacramento as well as numerous professional business and management courses.
He started Omega Galleries and Studios in 1972 in Sacramento where he welded steel sculptures. He rented studio space to eleven other artists in various mediums and organized monthly gallery exhibits which received frequent press in the Sacramento Bee Newspaper. Piersa expanded his work into a second studio where he did clay sculpture, painting, and drawing.
Today Piersa is in his “sweet spot of life,” as he likes to call it. He builds forms using abandoned materials. His unique approach results in towering one of a kind metal sculptures. They are visually attractive and thought-provoking. They range in size from eight inches to over 12 feet. The largest weighs over two thousand pounds.
“My Heart Is Open”, Piersa’s most poignant sculpture is permanently installed at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, MN. Other noteworthy pieces include, “Hero” and “Listen.” These honor our Military. Both pieces have been on display at the IDS Center in Minneapolis, as well as another piece, “Heart Anvil.”
Most recently Piersa Studios was featured on CBS Television Station Channel 4 WCCO, Minneapolis. The segment “Finding Minnesota” with John Lauritsen presented Piersa’s one of a kind body of work. It highlighted Piersa’s Studio and Lawn Gallery located at his home in Independence MN where one man’s scrap finds a new life with purpose at the hands of this sculptor.
