Stories from mythology and folklore are important sources of inspiration. Though the figures tell their own stories, I have come to realize that they are often self-portraits. I tell my own story through their expressions and gestures. In my figurative work, my intent is to capture the essence of what it means to be human, expressing without words the depths and complexities of our human existence, portraying qualities such as strength and vulnerability, joy and sorrow, love and loss, tenderness and nostalgia.
My "Architecture of Dreams" draws inspiration from science fiction and fantasy, from mythology, from my dreams, and from unusual architecture around the world, such as the whimsical buildings of architect Antonio Gaudi of Barcelona and those of Hundertwasser of Germany. I am also influenced by Niki de Saint Phalle's Tarot Gardens in France. My architectural sculptures tell stories and pose questions, introducing a bit of mystery.
My Island sculptures, "Aegean Island" and "Barcelona Fantasy", are magical places where an unseen population lives and dreams, complex little towns where viewers can imagine themselves exploring the winding stairways and hidden tunnels, opening doors into secret places. They are places of whimsy and mystery. I have never enjoyed the sculptural process more than when I made these "islands"!
