MISTY

I first saw Misty Copeland on the cover of Time Magazine in the spring of 2015. I was amazed at her physique and even more amazed at the story of her rise to fame to a Principal Dancer in New York's American Ballet Theater. Soon afterward, I watched several TV series about her and checked the Internet for additional photos of her dancing. These would become my resource for sculpting my impression of her—in motion. What I wanted to achieve was to portray her strength and athleticism as she leapt through the air. I knew I didn't want to show her with heavy supports attached to her body. How to do this caused me many restless nights. My final solution was to design a forward-thrusting stainless steel base polished to a mirror finish. By reflecting the surrounding area, the support would "vanish" as you looked at it.
